Take up the challenge of a lifetime

THE ULTIMATE ONCE IN A LIFETIME CHARITY CHALLENGE!

Would you like a challenge?

Do you like the taste of adventure?

If you are an individual or group who wish to take up the challenge of a lifetime, whilst raising money for a good cause you can join Out of Afrika on the roof of Africa! Mount Kilimanjaro is one of Africa’s most magnificent sights, and at 5985 is the highest freestanding mountain in the world.
This is one of the toughest challenges that Out of Afrika organises and whatever your motivation for wanting to join the expedition we’d encourage you to get in touch with us or Team Kilimanjaro who run the expedition on our behalf.

Both Out of Afrika and Team Kilimanjaro  will support you throughout, whether it’s training advice, what it’s actually like to be on the mountain, how to fundraise and what type of kit to take with you.

While no technical climbing is involved, this strenuous 33 km hike winds its way up through equatorial rainforest and across high moorland to the glacial terrain of the summit. While varying weather conditions can affect the degree of challenge the climb presents, if you are fit, you should have few problems - although, of course, the altitude can affect anyone and has little to do with one's fitness.

Join us on this ultimate challenge and help raise money for Out of Afrika as the charity relies on voluntary donations to continue our vital work transforming the lives of young people and their communities through education.

Below you will find experiences from past climbers which we hope will give you a feel for the environment.

Farouk and Tenille

Dear family, friends and colleagues, there are a few times in life that you can pack up your bags, get on a plane, travel for 14+ hours to another continent, and climb 6 days to the tallest free-standing mountain in the world/the highest peak in Africa: Mount Kilimanjaro. It is true – Farouk and I are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro from October 18-23, 2007. It is a 6 day trek reaching the peak at 5895 meters (19,340 feet).

If you wish and are able to provide support (and we hope you do!), please visit the website http://www.outofafrika.org.uk/FaroukandTenille/

An account of Natalie Chew, Megan and William Burrard-Lucas climb in July 2005

Megan Burrard-Lucas
Getting involved with Out of Afrika has been a rewarding experience. Our work for the charity started months before coming to Kenya. We started by raising money for the charity which involved boot fairs, a club night in London and a lot of kind people sponsoring us to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Between Natalie, William and I we managed to raise around £7000.

The next step in helping the charity was actually climbing the mountain.  Climbing to the summit was such an amazing personal achievement. However, knowing that our efforts in climbing
Mt. Kilimanjaro and all the sponsorship money we received went towards assisting the charity’s work made the climb even more rewarding.  Click here to read the full story >>

I have had an incredible time here this summer. I am so glad that I decided to get involved with Out Of Afrika. It is a wonderful charity that reaches out into the community and improves the lives of people who are in need of some help, and I feel glad to have played a small part in this organisation.

My involvement with the charity began about 6 months ago when I made the decision to climb
Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for them. Raising money has been fun, but at times it has been quite frustrating and tough. Through a mixture of car-boot sales, cocktail parties and generous sponsorship from friends I raised over two thousand pounds for the charity  (between the three of us we raised over seven thousand pounds).

In July 2005 we climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for Out of Afrika. The climb itself was an incredible experience – extremely taxing but also very rewarding. After the climb we came to Kenya as volunteers for the charity. This was our chance to see how the money we had raised was being spent and our opportunity to give a bit more to the organisation's cause.  Click here to read the full story >>

The Challenge

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a huge challenge in itself. According to the park authorities’ own estimates, a high percentage of climbers do not make it to the summit, however Team Kilimanjaro has a high success rate in getting people successfully to the roof of Africa.

Director John Rees-Evans served with two British Army units before beginning life as an expeditioneer. He has led various expeditions throughout the world. Complementary to his role with TK he serves as a mountain safety consultant to Kilimanjaro National Park. His wife, Rebecca holds the woman’s world record as the fastest woman to climb Kilimanjaro. The most challenging obstacle is the altitude, which requires both physical fitness and mental determination in order to succeed. We can only imagine how incredibly rewarding it must feel to stand at the top of the mountain having endured such a demanding climb. For most it will be more than a personal achievement as your efforts will have also benefited the people of Kenya.

To climb Mt. Kilimanjaro is an experience of a lifetime, highly recommended to the adventurous traveller willing to forego some of life’s luxuries for a few days.

Register by contacting Out of Afrika on Email here or on Tel. 01202 694492 or contact Team Kilimanjaro www.teamkilimanjaro.com  Tel. 01753 574570 and receive information about the trip.
