Computers for schools in Kenya

The joy on the faces of teachers and students were heart warming. We had gone along to St. Joseph the Worker Secondary School near Thika in Kenya, to deliver and install some computers we had supplied to them. This was the first time they had computers in the school, and couldn't wait to try them out. Unfortunately, the electricity was off that day, as often happens, so we were not able to demonstrate the equipment. Despite this they were very happy to have their long awaited computer equipment.

Gatitu Girls Secondary School were donated computers from Glenmoor School for Girls in Bournemouth. Glenmoor also gave a money donation for Gatitu to use towards an internet link in the future. The schools exchange letters and it is hoped that in the future they will be able to communicate using email. We have supplied several schools in Kenya with computers that have become obsolete here in UK when companies upgrade.

Internet has made its advance in the industrialised world, and the ICT revolution is already affecting the economies and our way of life. ICT is gaining foot in the developing world but it will take some time before it will benefit the poor people in these countries. Telecommunication networks and other ICT infrastructure are lacking as well as the technical and economic base for achieving a widespread connectivity. The situation is made worse by the lack of technical personnel and computer literacy. The digital divide threatens to impede the economic welfare of the developing countries.

ICT is the key to help developing countries to be a part of the global economy. It is also everybody's right to get information. While ICT provides opportunities for the poor people of the developing world, there also exists a risk that the ICT revolution can widen the gap not only between the rich and the poor countries but also between the rich and the poor people in the same country?

More donations
Out of Africa is dedicated to the support of training through donated technology. For more than a decade we have encouraged companies and individuals to donate computers and other technology, which is then ship for our projects in Kenya.

We are now accepting Pentium 4's + to supply schools, non-profit organisations, churches, community groups etc. in the developing world as part of our mission to help ease the Digital Divide.
